What is PDF?

Portable Document Format (PDF) is a cross-platform format for electronic documents developed by Adobe Systems using a number of PostScript features. First of all it is intended for representation of polygraphic production in electronic form. To view, there are many programs, as well as the official free program Adobe Reader. A significant number of modern professional printing equipment has hardware support for the PDF format, which allows you to print documents in this format without using any software.

Creating a project using the  PDF component

Let's create a simple WPF application using the PDF component

Creating a project using the  PDF component

We’ll need to add the necessary links to our project. Therefore, click on "Links" and select "Add link"

Creating a project using the  PDF component

We’ll need to select such links - ComponentPro.Pdf.dll. Which, I remind, are in the Extensions.

Creating a PDF document in WinForms

In this example, you will learn how to create and save a simple PDF document.

1. Create a new Windows Forms application and open the main form for the application in the designer. Add the UltimatePdf controls to your VS.NET toolbox if you haven't done so already (This is done automatically when you install UltimatePdf).
2. Add the UltimatePdf component to the project by dragging the UltimatePdf component found in the toolbox under the "Ultimate Document" Windows Forms controls. This will automatically add reference to the UltimatePdf and dependent libraries in your project.
3. Create an empty document and write the string "Hello World" on the first page in the PDF document. This task is further subdivided into the following tasks:
• Create a new PDF document.
• Add a page to the document.
• Create the font object to be used for writing the "Hello World" string. You can set the font size and style in the same statement.
• Write the text using the DrawString method of the Graphics object.
4. Then write the PDF document that we have created to disk. This is achieved by using the Save method of the PDF document.

using System;
using ComponentPro.Pdf;
using ComponentPro.Pdf.Graphics;
const PdfFontStyle fontStyle = PdfFontStyle.Regular;
const float fontSize = 12.0f;
// Create a new PDF document. This object represents the PDF document.
// This document has one page, by default. Additional pages have to be added.
PdfDocument pdfDoc = new PdfDocument();
// Add a page to the document
PdfPage page = pdfDoc.Pages.Add();
// Use the predefined fonts to draw the text.
PdfFont font = new PdfStandardFont(PdfFontFamily.Helvetica, fontSize, fontStyle);
// Draw the string at the specified coordinates.
page.Graphics.DrawString("Hello World", font, PdfBrushes.Black, 0, 0);
// Save the PDF document to disk.
pdfDoc.Save("HelloWorld.pdf");
// Close the document.
pdfDoc.Close();

Adding sections and pages

A PDF document contains one section at least . Each section can have many pages. The following example shows how to add a section to a PDF document and add the page to the newly created section.

PdfDocument document = new PdfDocument();
// Add a section
PdfSection section = document.Sections.Add();
// Add page to section
PdfPage page = section.Pages.Add();
// Save the PDF to disk.
document.Save("List.pdf");
// Close the document.
document.Close();

Conclusions and recommendations

The PDF library has so many methods and classes to work with elements in a PDF document - such as paragraphs, shapes, plain text, forms, page transitions, and more. Such an abundance of functionality allows
the user of this library to do whatever he wants. I would like to mention such important points as writing a PDF to a stream, converting HTML to PDF, as well as a tool for working with forms of AcroForms. AcroForms are PDF files that contain form fields. Data can be entered into these fields by the end user or the form author. Inside AcroForms are annotations or fields applied to a PDF document. When you load an existing document, the library loads AcroForm, if it is present in the document.
